KAPIJA CRMNICE

The gates of Cermeniza

You are at the "Besac" fortress. Its rich history has made it the central gate of the "Crmnica" region and its wine routes.

The origin of this fortification, which rises above the town of Virpazar, has not been determined with certainty to this day. However, it is believed that the fortress was built by the Turks in the 15th century, immediately after the fall of Donja Zeta. Three centuries later, it was conquered by Montenegrins, which will be sung by the famous Montenegrin statesman and writer, Petar II Petrović Njegoš. Further through history, different times determine its different purposes. Between the two world wars, it was adapted for the needs of the gendarmerie station, and during the Italian occupation, during the Second World War, it served as a prison. In 1979, an earthquake that hit Montenegro caused great damage.
