PRIČE O HRABROSTI

Stories of courage

Skadar Lake is full of underwater springs  -  or as they were popularly called – the eye.  The story of the origin of the name of the nearby town of Bar, to whose municipality the Crmnica region belongs, also speaks of their importance.

The curse of Queen Jelena Anžujske was reflected in the fact that she had to run away from her own son Dragutin.  During her escape, she hide in a cave between Sotonić and Gluhi dol in Crmnica. Her

husband, King Uroš Hrapavi, fled from his son to Bar, while Jelena and her daughter settled in that cave, spending their days in fasting and prayer. Near the cave there was a whirlpool, called ‘The Eye’, where the most delicious fish was caught. Queen Jelena agreed with the locals to leave her one fish on the board every morning.  She only went for fish when no one was there, because she avoided people.  One day, when they didn't bring her a fish, she exclaimed in revolt: "God forbid, they never caught her in the Eye again!". Then she mounted her horse and fled to Bar, where she said: "At least you won't find or cheat on me." And so that place was called Bar.
